The two week of the course is working on values simplifying it to the basic tonal values of the illustration before rendering it to the completion of the illustration. So for the lesson when looked some of masters of the golden age of illustration work to then looked at some of their illustration in a tonal version see the range of values; which then the instructor break it down to the simplified version of what he saw the illustration piece where to him. After that we choice a master piece and had to recreate the piece of illustration using only three tonal values which we would have to stick and try force ourselves to stay with the three tonal values. For the lesson I choice one artwork piece from Meade Schaeffer to recreate three tonal value study of that illustration for myself. The below image is a compared version of tonal value study using only three values. The left image is the Meade Schaeffer tonal value of the illustration piece and the right is the three tone values use to recreate for my studies of the illustration.
During the course of the week I have be working doing some more master illustration tonal studies using the technique taught during the class.I have decided to work on one of Frank Frazetta illustration piece for developing the skills of simplifying the illustration before getting into the more refined and final stage. I'm planning on doing another master illustration study before more on to working on my own three tone value composition with a story for the course that is due before the next lesson. The below image is another compare image showing the result of the practice of technique and the master piece illustration as the study:
